ghosts of halloween past

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

After posting pictures of my halloween costume a couple weeks ago, I’ve been meaning to add some photographs of some older costumes. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any evidence of the red velvet mummy who came out four or so years ago, but there are still some gems here. I love halloween.

First off is the more recent of the two robot costumes that I built in college. The defining feature of these costumes is their bulkiness, which meant that I could go to crowded halloween parties and cause havoc while trying to navigate my way to the keg. Plus it’s pretty hard to drink in this thing. My favorite part is the gauntlets. And that’s Adam dressed up as a shower curtain.

Next, I dressed up as Mojo Jojo using a mask, which was easy to find since the new Planet of the Apes movie had just been released, and a painted salad bowl for my brain cap. This was a team costume because Amy was dressed up as Buttercup.

Finally, we have my costume from last year, when I went as Steve Wynn and Jenn dressed as my Vegas girlfriend. Very topical!

Ok, that’s pretty much all the photos I have. I will leave you with this bonus shot of Eric’s awesome mask.

Tyrell building

Jenn and I saw the “Final Cut” of Blade Runner the other night at the Music Box. (Why do so many theaters, in Chicago and, I suspect, elsewhere, insist on using the British spelling – ‘theatre’ – which makes it hard for me to get to the right website by just typing a url?) As usual, the movie was totally awesome. I had a hard time spotting differences between the Final Cut and the Director’s Cut, which is supported by this pretty meager (meagre) list of changes. I definitely noticed an increase in the goriness of the bloody scenes. And the strippers with hockey masks.

Mostly, though, this was just another good chance to see Blade Runner on a big screen. There must be something in my genes that results in a totally innate warm fuzzy response to the sight of flying cars and huge, futuristic, pyramidal buildings. This is probably like the way Jenn feels about mother-daughter dramas.

This year I built the latest in a long line of large and impractical cardboard halloween costumes. I probably spent upwards of eight hours on this one, and then wore it for about two hours at a party. If you can’t figure out what the costume is supposed to be, look here.

After one night of standing in the corner and doing a ring scan, the costume has been retired down to my office (it’s too big to leave around my apartment). Now I can try to pass it off as an actual scientific instrument.
